What's the point?

Have you ever put your heart and soul into something only to turn around and think “Why am I doing this? What’s the point?”

You’ll probably feel like that at some point in regards to your business. As much as we romanticise the idea of starting a business and being our own boss there are going to be challenges that come your way that make you question your work or have people question you. How do you get through that you ask? Good question.

I’d like you to do a little activity with me. Think of an arrow. It has a long stick and on one end it has a triangular point. The pointy end is used to stick into the target. Imagine your business is that arrow. Imagine all your products, services, plans, plans, ideas and activities are the stick and your purpose is the pointy end. If you run your business with just the stick of the arrow and don’t have a purpose (a pointy end) your business will crumble to the ground every time you try to launch your product or services.

Some people start a business because they are good at something. If there is no need for your business then you’ll never get any customers. (Besides maybe your mum and grandma who want to support you.) Also if you ever question yourself or someone questions you as to why you are running your business if you have a purpose you can always go back to that to get clarification.

Here are 3 questions to ask yourself to get to the point and work with purpose:

1. What problem does my organisation seek to solve?

2. Why do I believe this problem needs to be addressed?

3. Does this problem matter to other people?

You can answer these questions with a friend and together you can brainstorm. Having another perspective might just be the thing you need to get you on the right track.
